The "Over Me" Appreciation Post

Let's talk about another underrated TLC song we all know from the 4th album, '3D', called "Over Me". This high uptempo, hardcore, retro break up song is actually one of the very few songs co-written by Chilli.

It was announced May 2001 by Leslie Brathwaite (who recorded this song with TLC) that they were in the studio, and recording some awesome new songs! Someone from TLC's camp, however, denied the 'rumor' saying the girls weren't recording anything together yet. Coincidentally, that was the same month it was announced Chilli and Dallas was 'over' and Chilli had moved on with Usher. 1 year and 6 months later, '3D' was released, 2 songs on the album credit Leslie as 'Recorded By' (including "Hey Hey Hey Hey") and only 1 of them credits Chilli as a co-writer... "Over Me". It was never confirmed nor denied nor brought to light really that this song may be about how Chilli felt about Dallas and got help from all or either DARKCHILD, Tyrrell, Kenisha, and/or Daniel to write it down. It wouldn't hurt to ask Chilli.

This song is also actually one of the very few songs on '3D' that marries very well with a Left Eye rap IMO (even though some of the lyrical content being a direct hit to T-Boz and Chilli and some of the lyrics are from her song "I Believe in Me"). However, it isn't nothing new that Lisa would take a previous rap (like other rappers) and place it on another track, reworked, and with somebody else for something different. She did it before with her rap for "I Need That" and it could be again since her performance is different on this track as well. It could be that or there could be a whole 'nother version of "I Believe in Me" that's more intense since her vocal performance does not match what's provided on the "I Believe in Me" track released and is more serious.... Hmmmm.... Well Lisa did say she started recording 'Supernova' in a dark staged after 'FanMail' released and that was a dark time in her career.
